Each month as we do the worldwide Nightscout count, it becomes apparent which country groups are "Paying It Forward" by sharing the solutions found within the #WeAreNotWaiting community. Nightscout España is a good example of this outreach effort. Nightscout España had 9 members for quite some time until group member Jesus Berian became a member of the Nightscout UK faculty. After participating in the CWD FFL UK (Children with Diabetes Friends for Life) conference in England in late October 2015, he returned to Spain with a renewed sense of mission on what could be accomplished at a local level.
Jesus went to work on becoming a participant at the largest T1 Diabetes conference in Spain and did a presentation on Nightscout and the benefits and solutions that existed for the families struggling daily with T1D. Not only did Jesus present at this conference, but he also formed the Nightscout Spain Faculty and had multiple people on hand to answer questions from the attendees throughout the conference. The faculty was not only prepared to share the Nightscout information, but they had translated and created eye catching and innovative handouts for the conference. Soon after the conference, the national media dealing with T1D took notice and Nightscout España started to appear in the most widely distributed periodicals throughout Spain.
Today the Nightscout España faculty is preparing for their very own conference at a prominent university in Madrid where attendance will reach 200 with multiple sessions to not only share the Nightscout phenomenon with the conference attendees, but to help them setup Nightscout onsite during the conference. All of this has translated into a growing Nightscout country group which will soon have its 600th member.
Nightscout España is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished when individuals unite in a common cause to "Pay It Forward" to those in need and to provide solutions and support in the every day real life struggle that is Type 1 Diabetes.
